Fiber Art

Tapestry Crochet

Tapestry crochet is a fiber art technique used to create detailed images by using multiple colors of yarn. Each stitch is carefully placed following a grid pattern, which are essentially pixels, resulting in an intricate tapestry.

Tiger Tapestry

This tiger tapestry was created using an extremely intricate chart composed of 12 unique colors. Each new color introduces exponential complexity.

The chart, found on a fiber art pattern site.

The process was very messy and required lots of patience. In addition to the mental stamina required to follow the pattern, the fibers often got tangled which needed to be untangled before moving on.

The most complicated rows with multiple colors took about 30 minutes to complete.

After the loose ends were snipped and the finishing touches were added, a beautiful piece of fiber art was born.

Toucan Tapestry

The toucan tapestry followed the same process as the tiger, albeit with fewer colors (only 7) and therefore less complexity.

The chart, found on a fiber art pattern site.

Parkside Community Montessori Tapestry

I made this tapestry for a small, local preschool. Unlike the animal tapestries with readily available patterns to start from, I needed to make the pixel grid before starting any crochet work.

Working backwards from the desired size, I created a 60×60 grid using Parkside’s logo.
